GCB Major Concert 2014

The Geelong Concert Band will be holding its major concert on Saturday December 6th at 7pm at the Geelong West Town Hall. This concert will feature the Workshop Band under the direction of Michael Wilding, the Community Band under the direction of Kevin Cameron and the Senior Band under the direction of Mark Irwin.

The Senior Band will be joined by guest Euphonium player from the Royal Australian Navy band, Fletcher Mitchell.

Fletcher began his musical carer on the baritone at the age of 8 in the school brass band. He soon moved on to the euphonium and joined the local community brass band where his love for music grew. He performed in many solo competitions at local, state and national level with great success winning many junior and open events.

After working as a music teacher for four years, Fletcher auditioned for the euphonium position with the Royal Australian Navy Band in 2006. He won the position and moved to Melbourne to take up the position in January 2007. He has been a prolific soloist with the Navy Band including performing as a soloist for live radio broadcasts on ABC Classic FM, recording major works for euphonium and wind band as well as performing solos in concerts with the Navy Band and some of the top community brass and wind bands all over Australia.

Fletcher has traveled the world as a soloist and low brass educator with highlights including solo performances at the IET Festival for euphonium and Tuba in Atlanta GA, USA 2013, a solo recital as a featured artist at the 2014 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference (ITEC) in Bloomington IN, USA. He also traveled to Canada in May this year to give master classes and a recital at the University of Toronto. 2015 will see Fletcher travel to perform as a soloist and give master classes in the UK, New Zealand and Italy as well as throughout Australia.

Fletcher recorded a solo CD with the Monash University Wind Symphony back in October featuring six brand new Australian euphonium solos written for him by some of the top composers in the country. Fletcher is married with two beautiful children and is a Yamaha Performing Artist.

Tickets will be available at the door – Adults $15, Concession $12, Group bookings of 10+ $10 each, students $5 and children under 12 free.

Come along and enjoy an evening of outstanding music performances.

Workshop Band Information Evening

The Geelong Concert Band will reform the Workshop Band in 2015 and start with new members who have never played a musical instrument previously or who played many, many years ago and would like to start playing again. No experience is needed as we start from the beginning and teach you to play an instrument of your choice. We are able to teach flute, clarinet, bassoon, oboe, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, french horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, bass guitar and percussion.

On Tuesday December 2nd we will be holding an information evening at Robertson Hall, Geelong College Preparatory School (enter off Minerva Rd) starting at 7pm. On this night we will give a demonstration of the instruments and then you will be able to try out most of the instruments. You will be provided with information regarding costs on the night. Unfortunately we only have a handful of instruments we can hire out, so it will be your responsibility to purchase a instrument ready for the start of 2015. We will provide you with details of instruments that we recommend you buy.
